Description
Hercules and Cacus by Baccio Bandinelli (1493 - 1560), Piazza della Signoria, Florence. Cacus was a fire-breathing giant who terrorised people from his cave located at the future site of Rome. Hercules killed him after Cacus took some stolen cattle from him. The sculpture was commissioned by Pope Clement VII of the Medici family, and was completed in 1534. It was created as a counterpart to Michelangelo's statue of David.
