Artist's Description
Herbert Henry Dow (1866-1930), US chemical industrialist and founder of the Dow Chemical Company. Dow studied at the Case School of Applied Science, graduating in 1888. He worked for a year as a professor, then moved into business dealings. His primary interest was the extraction of bromine from brine, and by 1891 he had invented and patented what is known as the Dow process. He founded the Dow Chemical Company in 1897, now one of the largest chemical companies in the world. Dow's awards included the Perkin Medal (1930).
