Artist's Description

Domestic robots. Joe Engelberger leaning against the domestic robot Helpmate, with the binocular vision system BiSight at lower right. Helpmate can move independently around a hospital to deliver medical records, drugs and food to medical staff and patients. It uses a stored map of the building to determine its exact route. Any unexpected obstacles in its path can be detected by high frequency sound (ultrasound) sensors and a video camera. Doors and elevators can be opened and operated by radio signals from the robot. Joe Engelberger is the founder of HelpMate Robotics, Danbury, Connecticut, USA.
