Description
Heavy Flavor Tracker detector at STAR. Central portion of the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) being installed at the STAR (Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC) detector. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA, began operating in 2000. The HFT detector tracks particles made of 'charm' and 'beauty' quarks, rare varieties (or 'flavors') that are more massive than the lighter 'up' and 'down' quarks that make up ordinary matter. The RHIC and its detectors are designed to help understand the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a state of matter in the early universe after the Big Bang. Photographed in 2014.
