Description
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a Pondskater (Gerris lacustris). This common bug is widely distributed throughout the British Isles and is a true bug. In the order Hemiptera, Gerrids are known by many different names ie. water striders, Jesus bugs, water scooters to name a few. Gerridae have the ability, due to their anatomy, to walk across the surface of water without breaking the meniscus (water tension) and are readily found in ponds, lakes and other waterways. 90% of Gerrids are freshwater bugs, 10% being marine bugs. Magnification x175 (x43 at 10cm wide)
