Description
Hartwell Observatory ornament, 19th-century illustration. This star-like roof ornament, made of gilded copper, was made by Bate of London. It can be seen on the observatory dome in images C023/0930 and H419/0511. The observatory, an annexe to Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire, UK, was built in the 1830s by British astronomer John Lee (1783-1866). Those who observed there included British astronomer William Henry Smyth. Artwork from Smyth's 'The Cycle of Celestial Objects continued at the Hartwell Observatory to 1859' (1860).
