Artist's Description

Zebra mussels. Hand holds a large Zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha, with smaller and younger mussels encrusting its shell. These specimens were collected from Lake St. Clair, the site where in June 1988, these mussels were first recorded in North America. They were introduced probably on a ship from Europe. Since then, Zebra mussels have invaded lakes and rivers in the USA, breeding very rapidly. By 1993, stretches of the Illinois river had achieved 94,000 mussels per square metre. Not only do the mussels encrust and pollute water pipes (including power stations) but they excrete a substance that is highly corrosive. They may also destroy indigenous aquatic life.
