Artist's Description
Gulf Stream map. Franklin-Folger chart of the Gulf Stream on a map of the Atlantic Ocean and regions, published in 1769. The Gulf Stream (dark area, upper left) is a major ocean current in the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of warm surface water flowing north-east from the Caribbean to Europe. The US scientist Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) asked his cousin Timothy Folger, captain of a whaling ship, to produce this map to help shipping make faster crossings. Navigation instructions are at upper centre and upper left. The map title (far right) credits Captain Edmund Halley (he of comet fame) with the main map (from a 1698 voyage), and Mount & Page (London, England) as the publishers.
