Description
Guillotine caricature. 18th-century artwork caricaturing the English Whig politician George Tierney (1761-1830) as an executioner ('Le Boureau') standing next to a guillotine. In the background is a crowd of liberty-capped citizens. This artwork was published in 1798, towards the end of the period of upheaval known as the French Revolution (1789 to 1799). At the time, Tierney was Member of Parliament for Southwark. The positions he later held in government were Treasurer of the Navy, President of the Board of Control, and Master of the Mint. This caricature, published in London in April 1798, is by the British artist James Gillray (1756-1815).
