Groombridge's transit circle. This device is used to measure the positions of the stars as they transit a predefined line. This is the first modern transit circle, made in 1806 for the British astronomer Stephen Groombridge (1755-1832) by the telescope manufacturer Troughton. It was installed at Groombridge's observatory at Blackheath, London. This artwork is from 'An Introduction to Practical Astronomy', published by William Pearson in several volumes between 1824 and 1829.
