Artist's Description
Green flash phenomenon at sunset. This elusive effect, caused by atmospheric refraction, is visible at sunset for a few seconds when the last portion of the solar disc goes beneath the horizon. This example was photographed from the Cerro Paranal mountain, at an altitude of 2600 metres in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. Ideal viewing conditions include an unobstructed view of the Sun on the horizon, and a very stable atmosphere. Such conditions at Cerro Paranal make the green flash a relatively common sight. This rare double green flash is due to two alternating cold and warm layers of air. Photographed on 28 March 2011.
