Description
Green Bank Telescope and farm buildings. Green Bank Telescope (centre) seen from surrounding farmland near Green Bank in rural Pocahontas County, West Virginia, USA. The GBT is a radio telescope that is part of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). Named after Robert C. Byrd and completed in 2000, it is the largest fully-steerable radio telescope in the world. It can be manoeuvred to view any part of the sky above 5 degrees elevation. The parabolic dish is 100 by 110 metres across. The receiver is suspended above the dish at the focus of the parabola to detect incoming radio waves. Photographed in 2015.
