Description
The Great Salt Lake, Utah, seen from space. In this south-westward view, the lake is in the foreground, and appears to be split into two halves. This is due to the rockfill causeway traversing the lake, which prevents any large- scale circulation of water. The lake is fed from a river to the left, so water in the left half is relatively fresh. The right half receives no fresh water, the high salt concentration giving it a pale blue colour. Beyond the lake is the 200 kilometer long Great Salt Lake Desert, including the Bonneville Salt Flats (near top centre). This photograph was taken from Shuttle Atlantis during Mission STS-45 of 24 March to 2 April 1992.
