Artist's Description
Great Fire of London. Artwork of the Great Fire of London, England, of 1666. Prominent in the background is St Paul's Cathedral which was rebuilt after the fire by Sir Christopher Wren. The fire, which started in a baker's shop in Pudding Lane, lasted several days and engulfed around 1.5 square kilometres. At this time most of the buildings in London were made of wood. This made it easier for the fire to spread and to go on to destroy most of the walled section of the city. The government's Rebuilding Act of 1667 required all new buildings to be constructed from stone and brick
