Description
Grand Inquisitor, Ferdinand and Isabella. 1910 engraving from a painting by Paul Laurens, of the Grand Inquisitor Tomas de Torquemada (1420-1498, left), with King Ferdinand II of Aragon (1452-1516) and Queen Isabella I (1451-1504) of Castile. The Grand Inquisitor was the lead official of the Spanish Inquisition, which was established by the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand II and Isabella I in 1478. It was intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their Kingdoms and to replace the Papal (Mediaeval) Inquisition, which was under the control of the Vatican. Ferdinand became Ferdinand V of Castile when he married Isabella in 1474, until her death in 1504.
