Description
The Gran Sasso massif, Italy, under which lies the world's largest underground laboratory for the study of subatomic particles from astrophysical sources. The main experiments involve the detection of neutrinos emitted by the Sun and supernovae explosions, high-energy particles in the cosmic rays, and magnetic monopoles. The laboratory lies under 1400m of rock which provides a shielding effect equivalent to 3500m of water. This does not affect the flux of neutrinos but stops the low energy particles in the cosmic rays, thereby improving detection of the highly energetic ones.
