Artist's Description
Gold panning. US prospector pouring dirt through a sluice box to try and obtain gold. The sluice box is placed so that water from the bucket runs through it, removing the lighter dirt and sticks and stones, while the heavy gold stays on the bottom of the box. The pan at lower right is intended to catch nuggets of gold that may wash through. Photographed by Russell Lee (1903-1986) in May to June 1940, in Pinos Altos, New Mexico, USA. This was part of a US government photography project that documented life in the USA between 1935 and 1944.
