Description
Goddard rocket research. Rocket with turbo-pumps at the Goddard workshop in Roswell, New Mexico, USA, in 1940. With US rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard (left, 1882-1945): Nils T. Ljungquist (machinist), Albert Kisk (brother-in-law and machinist), and Charles Mansur (welder). Despite receiving little recognition during his lifetime, Goddard, a pioneer of astronautics, explored mathematically the feasibility of reaching high altitudes using rocket propulsion. In 1926 he built the first liquid-fuel rocket. His speculations about Moon rockets were ridiculed, and his achievements were only recognised after his death with the dawn of the Space Age.
