Artist's Description
Sculpture by Giambologna of 'The Rape of the Sabine Women', at the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, Itlay. The sculpture depicts the abduction of women of Sabine families by the first generation of Roman men, who wanted wives. This event in the legendary history of Rome took place, according to tradition, around 750 BC, soon after the city was founded by Romulus and his followers. Giambologna, born Jean Boulogne (1529 - 1608), was a Flemish sculptor who lived and worked in Florence for much of his life.
