Artist's Description

George Shaw (1751-1813), British naturalist and zoologist most famous for his illustrated encyclopaedic zoology books such as his 'General Zoology'(16 volumes, 1809–1826) and with Nodder 'The Naturalist's Miscellany'(1789–1813). In these books he gave the first scientific description of the platypus and some of the first informed accounts of the remarkable new species found in Australia. In 1786 he became assistant lecturer in botany at Oxford University. Co-founder of the Linnean Society in 1788, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1789. In 1791 Shaw became Assistant Keeper of the Natural History Department at the British Museum and became the Keeper in 1806.
