Artist's Description
Sir George Hubert Wilkins (1888-1958), Australian polar explorer and photographer. He is dressed in the cold weather gear used during the Nautilus Expedition of 1931, the first submarine expedition to the North Pole. On 31 August, the Nautilus briefly dived under the polar ice cap, but was damaged and the expedition was aborted. Following its return, the submarine was scuttled in a Norwegian fjord.
