Artist's Description
George Bishop (1785-1861), English patron of science. Bishop made his fortune as a brewer; he was the head of the largest manufacturer of British wines in the UK. He built a private observatory near his home in Regent's Park, London, and hired observers to operate the equipment. Among the observers were the German explorer Eduard Vogel and astronomer William Rutter Dawes. Bishop never made observations himself but fully credited his employees for their discoveries. Under his patronage a set of accurate Ecliptical Charts were made. He served as president to the Royal Astronomical Society in 1857.
