Artist's Description

Geologist observing Kilauea eruption, 1969. This lava fountain (around 450 metres in height) is erupting from the Mauna Ulu volcanic cone of the Kilauea volcano. It is being observed from a puu huluhulu (older lava flow). Mauna Ulu is in the eastern rift zone of the Kilauea volcano on the island of Hawaii. It is the most active of the volcanoes on Hawaii. Photographed in December 1969.
