Gas street lighting. Close-up of a gas-powered street lamp. This operates using a set of gas mantles that glow and emit light when heated by a gas flame. The mantles are small pockets of silk or fabric impregnated with rare-earth metallic salts. When heated in a flame, these convert to solid oxides that glow brightly in the visible spectrum and emit relatively little heat.
