Description
Scratch built electric generator device used for the demonstration of techniques in the historical medical discipline of galvanism. This device dates from around 1900, England. Galvanism involves the therapeutic application of electric currents to the body to stimulate muscle contraction, it was a popular branch of quack medicine throughout the nineteenth century and its use continued until the early 1900s. Galvinism takes its name from Italian physiologist, Luigi Galvani (1737-98) who discovered that electric currents could affect muscle activity in dissected animals. Today, the study of the electrical properties of cells and tissues is known as electrophysiology.
