Description
Full Moon pastel artwork, by the English painter John Russell (1745-1806). The artwork shows impact craters and dark areas (maria) and light areas (highlands). Russell was an accomplished artist, and his paintings of the Moon were well known in the 18th and 19th century. The mapping of the Moon with telescopes started with Galileo in 1610, and then developed further during the 17th and 18th centuries as telescopes improved.
