Description
Fresnel lighthouse lens. The Fresnel lens was originally invented by the French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel for use in lighthouses. It is much thinner than a conventional lens, allowing for a large aperture and short focal length with much less weight. The result of this means that it catches more light from the light source and allows lighthouses to be seen over much greater distances. Photographed in South Stack lighthouse, Anglesey, Wales.
