Artist's Description

Frequency-hopping communications patent, 1942. Printed patent drawings describing a frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) method of secret communication proposed during the Second World War. This prevents radio signals from being tracked or jammed. The patent was filed by Austrian-born US film actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000) and US composer and inventor George Antheil (1900-1959). Lamarr was born Hedwig Kiesler. At the time of this patent she is referred to by her then-married name: H. K. Markey (Hedy Kiesler Markey). This is patent number 2,292,387 from the US Patent Office, dated 11 August 1942.
