Description
Free range pigs, Sus scrofa domestica. Two sows with piglets in trail and low-slung housing quarters in the background. In free range farming a balance is struck to rear livestock efficiently in less cramped, healthier conditions. Here the weaning piglets are learning to graze. Pigs are omnivorous (feed on plant and animal matter). The farming of domesticated pigs was practised in China at least 9000 years ago and was a common feature of ancient Greek and Roman agriculture. Numerous breeds, which evolved over the centuries, have all but disappeared in recent times with the development of intensive rearing systems. Photographed in Norfolk, England.
