Description
Free range domestic pig, Sus scrofa domestica. Grazing sow with weaning piglets learning to eat grass. Pigs are omnivorous (eat plant and animal matter). Here, free range farms efficiently rear livestock in less cramped, healthier conditions. Pigs are gregarious animals (living in pairs or in groups) with the focus of a group usually a female with her young. Female pigs with young are more alert and often aggressive and remain in the immediate vicinity of their young as long as they are still small, calling them and warning them in case of danger. Intensive pig rearing systems today farm fewer breeds of pigs than in the past. Photographed in Norfolk, England.
