Artist's Description

Francis Galton (1822-1911), British polymath and founder of eugenics. A half-cousin of Charles Darwin, Galton is best known for his investigations into human variation, heredity, and biometry. He pioneered the use of fingerprint identification and statistical analysis in human research. His conclusions of genetic superiority for northern Europeans is now discredited, along with his advocacy of eugenics (the selective improvement of human genetics). He also worked on meteorology and geography. He was knighted in 1909. This artwork of Galton in his 82nd year was published as the frontispiece of Hermann Muckermann's 'Eugenik' (1934).
