Description
Fool's gold, iron pyrites. A pale brass-yellow iron sulphide (FeS2) mineral with bright metallic lustre, common and widespread, often occurring as well-formed cubic and octahedron crystals; also termed fool's gold because of its colour. It is the most abundant sulphide mineral, found as an accessory in rocks (igneous, contact metamorphic, in sediments laid down under reducing conditions). Iron pyrites is used as a source of sulphur and in the manufacture of sulphuric acid. Photograph taken in Scotland.
