Description
Flower urchin (Toxopneustes pileolus). This sea urchin is very poisonous and lethal to humans. The flower-like discs are called pedicallariae which are grasping organs equipped with three jaws. If they are able to bite through the skin, a venom is injected. The attached debris serves as camouflage. Sea urchins feed mainly on algae, but will also eat invertebrates such as mussels, sponges and brittle stars. Photographed off the island of Malapascua in the province of Cebu in the Philippines.
