Description
Mixed blackbird flock. View of a large flock of mixed blackbirds. Yellow-headed (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) and red-winged (Agelaius phoeni- eus) blackbirds are seen here. These birds cohabit over much of their range. Yellow-headed blackbirds are migrants, breeding in south-western Canada and much of the western USA, and spending the winter in the south-western USA and Mexico. Red-winged blackbirds have a more extensive range, covering most of North and Central America. These birds live in grasslands near water, and feed on insects and seeds. Both species reach about 23 centimetres in length. Photographed at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, USA.
