Description
First terrestrial arthropods. Illustration of aquatic arthropods evolving from living in water to living on dry land, a transition that took place during the Paleozoic Era (around 540 to 250 million years ago). The exact period these animals first emerged onto land is not known, and what they looked like is even more of a mystery. This speculative image suggests that these first terrestrial animals may have been lobster-sized, centipede-like arthropods, perhaps related to amphibious euthycarcinoids. Also shown are imagined early terrestrial plants resembling modern liverworts and mosses.
