Artist's Description

First 'computer bug'. Page from the logbook for the Harvard Mark II computer showing a dead moth (taped to page at lower left) that had been found in one of the relays. The Harvard Mark II was one of the earliest electro-mechanical computers. The logbook entry below the moth reads: 'First actual case of bug being found'. This is an example of an early use of the term 'bug' to refer to an unexpected computer software or hardware malfunction. The logbook entry was made on 9 September 1947.
