Description
A fire danger rating board at Warrandyte, Victoria, Australia. Fire is a constant hazard in in rural Victoria during the fire season, which can run from as early as late October through until May in some districts. Roadside danger rating signs are updated each day by the Country Fire Authority (CFA). The risk is assessed taking into account the forecast temperature, wind speed and direction, and flammability (dryness) of the fuel load - such as leaf litter and grasslands. Code Red represents a catastrophic rating where the fire is predicted to be so intense that it will overcome designed safety features of buildings and cause major destruction. On such extreme days, residents are advised to evacuate homes well in advance of the fire.This picture was taken on a day in December when the forecast temperature was 38C and the wind a moderate to fresh gusty Northerly
