Description
Field surgeon's set. This European set dates from about 1800. It includes bullet forceps, a tourniquet, amputation instruments (knives for rapid cutting of soft tissues, and a bone saw), a trepanning brace (bottom) for drilling into the skull when treating head injuries, and a bone brush. Amputation was generally the only treatment option when infection or trauma occurred in the limbs and extremities in early nineteenth century medicine. Survival rates for amputees were very low. Anaesthesia and antiseptic surgical techniques were introduced in the second half of the 19th century.
