Femoral vein and artery. Light micrograph of a transverse section through femoral (thigh) tissue showing a vein (left) and an artery (right). Both have lumens (white) lined with smooth muscle (pink), but the artery has a thicker, more dense smooth muscle wall and narrower lumen in order to maintain the high pressure needed to move the blood around the leg. resorcin-fuchsin/azocarmine/naphthol green stain. Magnification: x30 when printed 10cm wide.
