Description
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the wall of the colon, showing a gland opening filled with bacteria. Rod-shaped bacteria, prob- ably Escherishia coli, a harmless inhabitant of the colon, have clustered (at centre, green) at an opening of a tubular gland of the colon or crypt of Lieberkuhn. The colonic glands function to produce faeces by absorbing water and nutrients from already digested food passing through. Cells around the gland are also absorptive; microvilli (tiny protruberances) on their surface increase surface area to increase their efficiency in ab- sorption. Magnification: x2,100 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x3,300 at 4x5 inch size.
