Description
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mucosal epithelium lining the interior (lumen) of the human colon - the large intestine. Beneath the absorptive epithelial cells visible here is a layer of smooth muscle, contraction & relaxation of which propels the contents of the colon towards the rectum. In the colon, absorption of water, sodium, vitamins & other minerals takes place; the watery chyme that enters the colon is reduced to semi-solid faeces. Drugs such as anaesthetics, sedatives, steroids & tranquilizers are readily absorbed in the colon. Magnification: X 1200 at 35mm size.
