Description
Blood vessels in lung. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cast of the microvascular circulation of the lung, showing the uniform network of capillaries surrounding the alveoli, the air sacs of the lung, where gaseous exchange with blood occurs. Conventional SEMs cannot reveal features such as capillary density & their three-dimensional distribution. To do so, casts are made, by injecting an unpolymerized mixture into the vascular system & allowing it to harden within the vessels. Digestion of the tissue with hydrogen peroxide solution leaves a replica of the vessels. Mag: x113 at 6x4.5cm size.
