Description
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of acini cells of the pancreas. The pancreas is a major digestive gland, secreting both exocrine (digestive enzyme) & endocrine (insulin & glucagon hormone) products. The cells here are arranged in serous acini or glandular clusters. Collagen fibres (white, yellow) bind these cells together. Capillary blood vessels run between the cell clusters. Endocrine hormone secretions are direct- ly released into the blood. Digestive enzymes drain into a system of ducts that terminate in the main pancreatic duct, which feeds into the duodenum. Magnification: x1,100 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x1,750 at 4x5 inch size.
