Description
False colour radio map of the thermal emissions of Saturn. The North Pole of Saturn is tilted toward the observer, with the rings crossing in front of the planet's southern disc. The hot, red region in the centre of the frame is caused by a band of low atmospheric ammonia concentration, allowing deeper hotter layers to be detected. The low-brightness blue of the rings is not caused by thermal emission, rather by the scattering of primary emissions from the planet by the ring material. This image was made at a wavelength of 6cm by the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico, USA.
