Description
Failed first Wright Flyer flight. US aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) in the Wright Flyer after its failed flight of 14 December 1903. This was the first attempt by the Wright brothers (Orville and Wilbur) to pilot their powered Wright Flyer following glider tests over the previous few years. This attempted flight took place from the incline of a sand dune (Big Kill Devil Hill) on a beach near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA. Wilbur pulled up too sharply on take off, stalled, and crashed to the sand with minor damage. Three days later, in the repaired Wright Flyer, Orville successfully made the historic first flight in a heaver-than-air machine.
