Description
Fresco painted by Masaccio between 1425 and 1427, in the Cappella Brancacci, Florence. It depicts the grief-stricken Adam and Eve being driven out of the garden of Eden into the world outside by an armed angel after eating the forbidden fruit. The dramatic realism of this fresco had a major influence on Florentine Renaissance painting and his style was studied and copied by Fra Angelica, Michelangelo and others. The Masaccio frescoes are significant in that they introduced Brunelleschi's rules of linear perspective and composition into Florentine Renaissance painting. In addition, they increased the illusion of depth perception by using his technique of 'rilievo', in which the scene depicted is illuminated by one dominant light source which, by creating subtle shadows and reflections, enhances the modelling of figures and the rendition of textures.
