Description
Excavated room. 18th-century artwork of a room excavated at Pompeii, Italy, with a skeleton at lower right next to a well. It is thought this was a laundry room and the skeleton is that of a washer-woman. This artwork illustrated a paper on discoveries at Pompeii, written by British ambassador to Naples Sir William Hamilton (1731-1803). Pompeii, in the Bay of Naples, was a Roman city that had been destroyed by a volcanic eruption from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was rediscovered in 1748. Published in Volume 4 (1777) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
