Artist's Description

Six late bronze age European socketed axes from about 1100 BC to 600 BC. showing some of the variation in style and copper alloys employed. the wooden handle entered the socket and the base of the socket was generally thickened to stop it splitting. All but one are looped as a method to tie the head onto the handle. the second axe head may have used a securing piece to secure the wood via the keyhole in the upper part of the blade. Not all of these axes would have been working axes for cutting or weapon use. Some may have served a currency or votive purpose or merely to signify rank or wealth of the owner.
