Description
Eugenics research. Heredity chart showing the racial focus of eugenics in the early 20th century. The text, attributed to British-US physician Woods Hutchinson (1862-1930), refers to research by the Carnegie Institution on the genetics of skin colour. This diagram, which dates from around 1916, is part of the collections of the Eugenics Record Office (ERO), Cold Spring Harbor, New York, USA. Those funding the ERO included the Carnegie Institution. Eugenics is the controversial practice of selectively improving the genetics of human populations. Eugenicists of this period were criticised for their focus on race and their racist assumptions.
