Description
Inventors and pioneers of the hot-air balloon, the two Montgolfier brothers, Joseph Michel (1740-1810) and Jacques Etienne (1745-99), constructed a 'globe aerostatique' in 1783 in which they successfully achieved lift by setting light to a cauldron of paper beneath the open base of a large-diameter bag. This hot-air balloon became known as a Mongolfiere, and, in a tethered balloon, Etienne made the first manned ascent. In October1783, the first free manned flight was made. The two passengers were Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes.
